Sacramento Calls For An MLS Berth

We’ve all heard about the variety of potential expansion teams in Major League Soccer for quite some time now, and it seems as if that isn’t going to stop anytime soon. From top to bottom the league is already full with a lot of quality, but the question remains: just how much further can we go?

Nobody really knows the answer to that because until we see these potential expansion teams in action, we don’t know much about the quality of their play. One thing we do know, however, is that one city in California is particularly excited about the possibility of entering the MLS in the next few years.

That city, as reported by MLS Multiplex, is Sacramento. The capital city of the state has been yearning for more opportunities to cheer their teams on in the big five leagues, and now, they’ll get it.

Making moves

“Garber said the third major item is for Republic FC to finalize their corporate sponsorship plan. The organization has worked on these items for a long while. That’s why they are close enough to make the MLS Board of Governor’s list.

Republic FC supporters have been thinking about how their lives will change once they’re gathering downtown. Their home, Papa Murphy’s Park, seats 11,000 and is on the site of the Sacramento Fairgrounds. The new site will take up 17 acres of the 244-acre Sacramento Railyards. This is the historic western terminus of the 1860s Transcontinental Railroad.

The soccer-specific stadium, expandable to 25,000 seats, has become a vital component of Sacramento’s plans to transform the railyards into a dynamic urban environment and major mass transit hub.”

These plans, alongside many of the others that have already been mentioned, give you a good look into the mind and mentality of this USL team. Unlike many other expansion teams from years gone by, they aren’t going to be starting fresh. They are going to be carrying their legacy on from another league, and it’s really exciting to see that.

On the way up

There’s no guarantee that they’re going to be able to make an overwhelmingly successful transition, but it’s not like they don’t know that or aren’t aware of that.

There’s a great deal of silence in the air right now around the situation, mainly because it feels like things are going to burst into life within a matter of weeks. That’s not a prediction (well, it is, but not really) because it feels more like a spoiler than anything else. We’ve seen everything that this potential new franchise has to offer, and we all like what we’re seeing.

The fact that there are still so many folks that don’t have a clue what they’re about is kind of heartwarming, in a weird way, because they have no idea what’s coming around the next corner. Call us sadistic, but we can’t wait to see the looks on their faces when they realise how much they’ve been underestimating this Sac-Town effort.

So here we go again, team. It’s expansion time.
