Loss in Indiana Drops Gophers to 4-4-1

Fighting through the wind and the rain, the University of Minnesota women’s soccer team took to Jerry Yeagley Field in Bloomington, Ind. tonight. Minnesota dominated the offensive push throughout the match, creating multiple scoring opportunities but were unable to connect, falling 2-0 to Indiana. The loss drops the Gophers to 9-7-1, 4-4-1 B1G on the season while the Hoosiers improve to 9-7-1, 4-5 B1G.

Despite maintaining possession for the majority of the first half, the Gophers let two goals get through to head into halftime trailing 0-2. Indiana’s Abby Smith found the net first, scoring in the 22^nd minute off of a cross to the right endline. Less than eight minutes later, the Hoosiers scored again with a one touch turnaround by Orianica Velasquez.

Minnesota’s defense tightened its play in the second half, limiting the Hoosiers to just two shots to add to their overall total. The Gophers had plenty of opportunities, most notably a bullet from Taylor Uhl at the 71:27 minute mark and another by MacKenzie Misel four minutes later. Uhl maneuvered past the Hoosier defenders to open up space and put herself in position for clear shot. Misel worked her way up from the backline to launch an attempt.  In both instances, Indiana’s goalkeeper Sarah Stone was there for the save.

The Gophers finished with a 16-6 advantage in shot attempts, but the Hoosier defense denied every chance they got. Stone finished with a total of seven saves on the match.  Uhl led the team with five shots, three on goal. Misel added three, while Brianne Price and Becca Roberts added two apiece. Cat Parkhill played between the posts for the Gophers and collected three saves.

Minnesota finishes their swing through the state of Indiana on Sunday with a noon match against Purdue.
