When it comes to European football you’ve got a few standard top leagues that are littered around the continent: the Premier League, La Liga, and Bundesliga. You could certainly argue that Serie A is part of that discussion, but when it comes to the three that we initially mentioned, Bundesliga doesn’t seem to get as much praise as the other two. That might be due to the overall quality of the league, and to be perfectly honest, that makes a lot of sense.
In Bundesliga you never really know who could be relegated on a year to year basis, mainly due to the overwhelming unpredictability of the division. It always just seems and feels like there’s not enough of an appreciation for them, even though we had an all-German final in the Champions League just a few years ago. Of course, there’s been a gradual decline in recent years, but that’s to be expected when you’ve got the quality of the Spanish and the English leagues.
As reported by BBC Sport the title race is starting to become a lot clearer, with Bayern Munich starting to stretch a little bit clearer of Borussia Dortmund when it comes to the points total. That isn’t a guarantee of winning the title, though, and we do happen to be a little bit worried that they’re going to lose focus with just a few games remaining. Reports like this one from Marca indicate that their attention is still focused on what’s going to happen during the summer transfer window, even though they’ve got so much left to fight for in the next few weeks.
Alas, not so long ago it seemed like Dortmund were going to be the ones lifting the title up high, but we tend to think that there’s one very specific reason behind Bayern’s rise back up to the top of the table: experience.
It’s not like both of them don’t have a wealth of experience, but the Munich-based juggernauts just know how to edge that bit further ahead when it matters the most. They knew that there would be hell to pay if they lost out on the title this season, especially in the wake of their Champions League disappointment.
With the likes of Ribery and Robben being set to move on in the next few months, it really does feel like this is the end of an era. As such it only makes sense, poetically speaking, for Bayern to get another Bundesliga title under their belt.
As we look ahead to the near future it feels like there’s still a chance they could be caught and overtaken in the next few years, especially given the quality of the teams around them. The key is going to be for them to build on their younger talent, and when they head out into the summer transfer window, they can’t afford to make any mistakes.
But before all of that, let’s just see if they can remain focused between now and the end of the season. We happen to believe they’ll be just fine, but we’ve been wrong before.
