This week the City of Woodbury upgraded plans for a new field house as part of the planned Bielenberg Sports Center expansion, increasing total estimated cost from 15 to 21 million dollars.
Bob Klatt, Woodbury’s Parks and Recreation Director, reports the state-of-the-art structure will be fully air-conditioned for year-round use with a 90,024 square foot main field. By comparison, Blaine’s National Sports Center field house is 58,350 square feet.
Though the Bielenberg field house can be used for other sports and for the Woodbury Expo, a local business and non-profit fair, the planners hope Minnesota soccer players keep the facility busy playing the beautiful game year-round. Imagine an air-conditioned summer tournament when outdoors it’s 95 degrees and humid.
In addition to the field house, the Bielenberg Sports Center covers 320 acres with 18 full soccer fields, 18 baseball fields, a wheelchair baseball field, two indoor and one outdoor ice sheets, and other sport facilities. Bielenberg also has four brick pavilions dispersed among its fields with covered picnic benches, concession stands, and large indoor-quality men’s and women’s restrooms.
