Every year, prior to the State High School Tournament, the Minnesota State High School Soccer Coaches Association (MSHSSCA) awards the Mr. and Ms. Soccer Award to a recipient who is deemed the best overall player in the State. These awards are handed out to both the boys and girls and for Class A and for Class AA.
This year’s winners are:
Class A – Boys
Johnny Mulvahill – Senior Forward – Benilde-St. Margaret’s
Mulvahill lead his team to a 16-2-1 record this fall qualifying for the state high school tournament. He had 16 goals on the season with 10 assists good for 26 points.
Class A – Girls
Jill Richgels – Senior Forward – Simley
Jill Richgels is recognized as one of the best girls soccer players in the State. Her Simley Spartan High School team went 12-5-1 this season but lost in sections in a game that went to overtime. Personally, she had 22 goals on the 2011 season with 10 assists for 32 points. Richgels has made an oral commitment to play at Creighton University.
Class AA – Boys
Mario Aleman – Senior Midfielder –Spring Lake Park/St. Anthony
The #10 on his team ended his senior season with 18 goals and 11 assists. He lead his Panthers to a 13-3-3 all the way to the 5AA finals.
Class AA – Girls
Alexis Foley – Senior Forward – White Bear Lake
Foley’s Bears went 11-4-0 this season making a run for the state tournament only to be defeated in overtime in a section final game. This multi-sport athlete finished her senior season with 17 goals and 10 assists.
