The world of football aka soccer is a really strange place, and even that might be viewed as ‘putting it lightly’. There are often so many different moving pieces that you never quite know what’s coming around the next corner, which is both fantastic and terrifying in equal measure.
Take a look at the Seattle Sounders as a prime example of that. From success to failure and back again, this club has one of the most passionate fanbases in Major League Soccer – and yet, there’s still so much fluctuation when it comes to how well they’re doing in the league.
Now, as reported by BBC and Goal, something even stranger has happened to the club as we look ahead to the home stretch of this year’s campaign.
The 12th man
Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, Ciara, Macklemore and a total of eleven families with ties to the city of Seattle have officially become the brand new owners of the Seattle Sounders.
“We want to bring the best soccer players in the world right here to Seattle,” said Wilson.
Ciara added: “It’s an honour to join the Sounders team and have the unique opportunity to represent female ownership within major league sports.”
The 2016 MLS Cup champions are well and truly in the hunt for a strong end to the season this time around, as they set their sights firmly on the playoffs.
As you can imagine this has raised a few questions regarding who should be viewed as a feasible option to own a soccer club, but when you really think about it, there’s not much reason to dislike this – especially if you’re a Seattle fan.
While this is obviously going to be viewed as an investment for these guys, the fact that they have such a strong connection with the city will mean a great deal to the fans. They will want what’s best for them, and they’ll mean that from the heart.
Stand up, Seattle
Seattle is often viewed as one of the best cities in the United States, and we can understand the logic behind that. It’s vibrant, it’s beautiful, and it’s in a great location if you want to just escape the rest of the world (or country, as it were).
As we look ahead to the future of the beautiful game, we wouldn’t be at all surprised to see this become a bit more of a regular thing. Think about it: there are more high profile celebrities than ever, especially in the world of sports, and money has never been more important in this field than it is right now.
The Sounders have an incredibly bright future and that much is obvious, but it was also true before this takeover even happened.
There’s quite clearly an understanding of what it means to drive a fanbase like this one, and it’s going to be really exciting to see that continue to grow over the course of the next few years and beyond.
For all other clubs in the league, you’d better watch out.
