Major League Soccer may have not been around quite as long as most other major leagues around the world, and as a result of that, there are still many, many records that are going to be broken. One such record, as reported by MLS Soccer, was busted last night by New York City FC.
NYCFC went into their clash with FC Cincinnati knowing that their was probably a pretty good chance they’d come away with the three points. However, they probably didn’t anticipate just how difficult they’d make it for themselves. The record in question is that New York City FC are the first team in the history of the MLS to win a game after conceding two own goals.
Some may choose to look at the comedic side of this and that’s absolutely fine, but in the same thought process, you also need to try and look at the positives here. NYCFC were able to overcome adversity in a way that few others have been able to, because let’s face it, the embarrassment of conceding two own goals in one game is pretty apparent.
ESPN has the full report for the game and, to be honest, New York probably could’ve won by even more goals than they actually did. Of course, the thing we want to focus on is the entertainment value that was produced from the game itself, and from the wider spectrum of the MLS as a whole. One of the reasons people don’t want to, or are too lazy to tune into the MLS is because they think it’s a big joke. This game, ironically enough, both supports that idea and negates it all in the space of 90 minutes.
NYCFC have a few players that could honestly make a really good career for themselves over in Europe, and that’s a testament to how much the sport is growing in North America. That point of view has been reiterated time after time, but it’s the truth.
“Before Thursday night, six teams in MLS had conceded multiple own goals in a single game, including two this season. None emerged with a victory.
New York City FC changed all that, becoming the first to concede two own goals and win in their 5-2 victory over FC Cincinnati, a game they led by multiple goals for the final 73 minutes despite seeing Heber and Sebastien Ibeagha turn the ball into their own net.
The previous six teams to concede multiple own goals all lost, including the Colorado Rapids in their 4-1 defeat to the Houston Dynamo this March and the Seattle Sounders in their 2-1 defeat to FC Dallas just last Saturday.”
Come on now, how can you read sentences like these and not be utterly enthralled and entertained?
NYCFC could be dark horses this season but given how well some of the other sides in the West are doing, you’d have to imagine that the entire Eastern Conference is questioning whether or not they’ll be able to make any serious moves once the play-offs roll around.
