There are plenty of questions heading into Inter Miami’s inaugural season of Major League Soccer action, and understandably so. While it may be exciting for the Florida city to have another major sports team being added into the mix, there are no guarantees that they’ll be able to find the same immediate success as the likes of Atlanta United and LAFC.
It all depends on the type of recruitment scheme they wind up operating, and according to The Guardian and talkSPORT, they’re going to be aiming pretty high.
Inter Miami are believed to be very interested in the possibility of trying to sign Luka Modric from Real Madrid. The Croatian, who had the best year of his career in 2018, has spent the last twelve months leading a life of speculation as fans continue to wonder what he’s going to do next in his legendary career. Some believe he’s going to head on over to Inter Milan, ironically enough, who have shown great interest in him in the past.
Alas, it no longer appears as if that’s something that is on the cards, probably as a result of it taking too long – or because Inter Milan have their finger in so many pies right now that it’s sort of hard to keep track of who it is they want to sign at any given moment.
David Beckham is the man that seems to be leading the surge here and that won’t come as a surprise to many. The English legend is well aware of just how talented Modric is, and he knows the kind of validity and quality he’d add to their ranks.
Luka isn’t stupid and he knows that his days in professional football are numbered, which is hardly a thing to shy away from, given the fact that he’s had a glittering career at the top of the game.
All it means is that it’s time for him to think about his options, and taking a big pay day over in the States definitely comes across as a really viable and logical option.
You might choose to see it as him giving up on the idea of playing at a high level in Europe, but he’s already been able to prove what he’s capable of over the course of an extended tenure at the top.
It’s not his fault that he isn’t being positioned as the most important star within Real Madrid’s ranks, and it’s not the club’s fault, either. It’s just how the cards have fallen and the sooner all parties come to terms with that, the better.
Ahead of their big new stadium complex being built there are still some question marks hanging over the head of Beckham and Inter Miami, but one thing is for sure: they’ve got the money in their bank account to bring in some really big names.
Regardless of whether or not they get everyone they desire, they’re going to be big players in the MLS for a long time.
