The expansion of the MLS in recent years has been nothing short of remarkable, and as we look ahead to the future, there’s plenty more to come. The league seems to be entering new markets and new cities with each and every passing week, and in many ways, there is no end in sight regarding just how big this league can get. Given their lofty ambitions for becoming one of the best outlets for football in the game, that can only be a good thing.
One team, in particular, that seems to be making a lot of waves is Austin FC. Austin is one of those cities that has always felt like it deserves more respect from the four major North American sports, and while they may not be getting it just yet, they certainly are from the world of soccer. They have put a series of plans in place so that between now and 2021, when they’re scheduled to start play in the MLS, they’ll be able to build a phenomenal franchise for themselves.
The MLS Multiplex details the belief that they are ‘doing things right’, and when you really think about it and analyse the evidence, that seems to be a true statement. The report takes a look at something MLS Soccer themselves have documented, which is the beginning of their Academy work. It’s always important to do everything in our power to bring the youth up into a position where they can thrive in any and all sports, but for the Americans, that’s especially true of soccer. This sport is still in its infancy over in the States, and there’s a lot of work left to be done.
“Austin is very rich in talented youth soccer players,” head coach Junro Narita said in a club statement. “This group represents a genuine integration of players with diverse backgrounds, skill sets and personalities that reflect this vibrant community.”
“We’re proud of all of the players who participated, and we’re looking forward to coaching our team this fall,” academy director Tyson Wahl said.
“There is tremendous potential and a strong sense of teamwork within our first-ever group. We look forward to the journey with them as we establish a strong culture of development for players and families who enter the Austin FC Academy.”
There seems to be no end in sight for their plans and continued push to be one of the MLS’ biggest and best franchises, and that’s great to see. There are obviously going to be comparisons made between themselves and some of the other new franchises coming into the fold, but that’s irrelevant. All they can do is focus on their own work, focus on what they’re doing right and can continue to do right, and bring in a solid fanbase.
They’re ticking all of the right boxes, and we’re really looking forward to seeing whether or not they can make an instant impact when their MLS debut finally occurs.
