Puerto Rican National Team Keeps Things Close with Spain

Over 18,000 jammed the newly refurbished Juan Ramon Loubriel stadium in Bayamón, Puerto Rico on Wednesday to watch El Huracán Azul, ranked 138th in the world, take on world giants Spain. The Spaniards are currently ranked 1st in the world after winning the World Cup in 2010 and the European Championship this past summer.

Many had predicted a blow out of major proportions, but with some tired and perhaps uninspired legs from the Spanish side, who are about to start their European club seasons, the Puerto Rico National Team was able to keep the math close and give their fans a day to remember with a close game that ended 2-1 Spain.

Santi Cazorla scored in the 42nd minute for Spain and Cesc Fabregas added a second in the 45th.

Marc Cintron scored in the 65th minute for Puerto Rico as he beat Spanish goalkeeper Pepe Reina.

New York Red Bulls and former Islanders goalkeeper Bill Gaudette was outstanding in goal and made eight saves to keep Puerto Rico in the match.

Seven of the starting eleven for Puerto Rico are currently playing in the NASL. Alexis Rivera, Anthony Vazquez, Richard Martinez, Andres Perez, Hector Ramos and Noah Delgado suit up for the Islanders, and John Krause plays for the Carolina RailHawks.
