We have all been following the news over the course of the last few days as more and more sporting events are postponed or canceled as a direct result of the coronavirus outbreak. Now, with this being an incredibly fluid situation, many fans are wondering just how much worse it could possibly get.
While we all understand that there are far, far more important things than just football to concern ourselves with right now, the nature of most football fans is to ponder over when they’re going to get the chance to see the beautiful game being played once again.
The answer at this moment in time is simple: we don’t know. Nobody knows what direction this whole thing is going to go in, but as we look ahead to the summer, it appears as if there is one particularly vulnerable competition still out there: UEFA Euro 2020.
The ripple effect that would be caused by a postponement of Euro 2020 is obvious, but at this point in time, many fans and pundits fail to see how it could possibly go ahead.
There are still some big question marks over the status of the Summer Olympics in Tokyo but for now, we just have to take things one step at a time.
The expectations that have been placed onto the shoulders of Euro 2020 are massive already, with this being set to be the first European Championships hosted across Europe. With most cities and countries across the continent being on lockdown, it doesn’t really seem all too likely that it’ll go ahead.
The hope is that things will start to settle down in the next few months, but there’s just way too much uncertainty surrounding the domestic leagues to even think about what will happen on the international stage.
UEFA Euro 2020, at this point in time, looks set to become UEFA Euro 2021 and we don’t see all too much wrong with that.
It gives fans something to look forward to next summer, and providing the lockdowns come to an end in the upcoming months, it gives the domestic leagues a slim shot at finishing up in time for next season.
Of course, this may all be redundant if COVID-19 continues to spread in the manner that it has been, but as we’ve already said, this is about going step by step.
Reigning champions Portugal will almost certainly be keeping hold of their crown beyond the next few months, but in the grand scheme of things, many of us are concerned that our lives beyond sports could be impacted for a long time to come.
Comparisons have been made to the wartime efforts that were put in place to keep people safe, and of course, we couldn’t even begin to compare to what those people went through in both the first and second World War.
Alas, these unprecedented circumstances have thrown us all into a tailspin, and it doesn’t appear as if there is an end in sight – for now.
