Christian Eriksen’s comments about his future recently were more confusing than of a clarifying stance. While they did state that he would be open to leaving Tottenham, they never clearly stated that he indeed is leaving the London giants.
That makes links with Real Madrid a very interesting topic. The Los Blancos boss Zinedine Zidane clearly likes the Dane a lot and wants him at the club and Eriksen’s comments only fueled the fire even more.
While Paul Pogba seems above Eriksen in the priority list, the Tottenham man is certainly as good as Pogba on his day. This season hasn’t been the best for him, but Eriksen’s versatility in midfield has often bound Spurs together when the side has struggled with injuries. He has been happy playing all across the middle of the park depending on where Mauricio Pochettino has wanted him to play.
Some of his criticism is valid, but Eriksen is world class on his day- someone who every top club will love to put their hands on.
With Isco being continuously linked with a move away from Real Madrid, Eriksen seems like someone who could fit in to replace the Spaniard. While Eriksen isn’t as much of a dribbler as Isco maybe, he can play in similar positions as the former Malaga man. Wherever Isco has played for Real is where Eriksen has played for Spurs, albeit in different styles.
On thing that is for certain is that Eriksen will always be the lynchpin at Spurs if he stays. His creativity and vision is deemed missing whenever he is injured or suspended as Spurs don’t have another creative midfield player like him. In his absence, Harry Kane struggles to get as many chances as he would in the Dane’s presence.
Eriksen is tailor-made for Pochettino’s system and with Tottenham now far more financially secure, they would be able to hand him a bigger contract than their previous offer. Their consistent presence in the Champions League is always a plus for any world class talent like Eriksen.
Having said that, Real won’t be a bad move either. In rebuild mode, Eriksen would join a Real side that is brand new and shiny and has players like Eden Hazard, Luka Jovic, Toni Kroos and Luka Modric. But the emphasis on him will reduce if he isn’t seen as a replacement for Luka Modric.
That is one drawback of joining Real Madrid- the player isn’t as important as he was at his previous club. You will be in a team full of glossed over superstars. That is an environment where players can struggle.
But in the end, it depends on where Eriksen finds a better offer. Real Madrid might end up not making an offer, meaning Spurs would have Eriksen for another season and they might end up extending his contract.
One thing is for sure, wherever Eriksen goes- he will benefit. He is a player who is worth well over 100 million pounds and world class. Be it Tottenham or Real, his class is going nowhere.
