Wolves Overcome Manchester City In Molineux Classic

In one of the most memorable games of the Premier League season so far, and potentially of the entire decade, Wolverhampton Wanderers put a huge, huge dent in Manchester City’s title hopes as they completed the double over Pep Guardiola’s men.

As reported by BBC and The Guardian, though, it wasn’t always the easiest of games for them to contend with.

Just 15 minutes into the game we saw Diogo Jota being brought to the ground by Ederson who was sent off, meaning that Claudio Bravo had to come on for Sergio Aguero who was sacrificed.

Despite going down to ten men it was City who were able to take control of the game, winning a penalty courtesy of VAR. Alas, Raheem Sterling missed the resulting spot kick, but it was retaken as a result of encroachment. Sterling missed again with Rui Patricio saving both, but the rebound fell favorably to him.

Sterling scored with a nice chip early in the second half to make it two, and from there, it looked as if it was going to be a fairly routine remainder of the game for the champions – oh, how wrong we were.

Adama Traore scored with a delightful effort to bring Wolves back to within one goal of their opponents, and then after robbing Mendy of the ball late in the game, Traore squared it to Raul Jimenez who scored the equaliser.

Then, in the 90th minute, Matt Doherty put together an amazing one-two passage of play with Jimenez before slotting in the winner to ensure Manchester City remained 14 points behind the league leaders Liverpool.

Guardiola was as somber as you’d expect following the game, with lots of talk surrounding the chase between City and Liverpool.

“Eighty minutes 10 against 11 is so tough, so demanding. We could not defend the result.

Watching magic unfold

“We have to think of the next game and about winning our games. It’s unrealistic to think about that [catching Liverpool]. In 48 hours we have another game.”

“It is big for a long time. It is not realistically to think about the title race. I have been asked the question for a long time and it is the same answer.”

Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo was diplomatic as ever after the big win.

“I would not have been disappointed even if we did not win because we played good. No matter what the result I must be proud of the players.

“We had much more of the ball than expected, so we had to find solutions.

“We played a nice way, in the way we wanted, passing ball side to side and getting one-on-ones in wide areas.”

City have some serious questions that need answering over the course of the next few weeks and potentially even months, but beyond that, there needs to be a lot of praise directed towards Wolverhampton Wanderers.

They are only two points off of the top four and they are showing no signs whatsoever of slowing down.
