Wolves Attempt To Repeat History Against Manchester United

As reported by BBC and Mirror we are just a matter of hours away from one of the most intriguing games that is set to take place across FA Cup third round weekend – Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Manchester United.

The magic of the cup that comes with the FA Cup, world football’s oldest club competition, is still alive and well in a lot of ways. From lower league upsets to top flight clubs squaring off, there’s a lot to love about it.

They meet again

In a game that will see United attempt to break a streak in which they haven’t been able to beat Wolves in their last four meetings, it’s odd to think that the Red Devils are actually being positioned as the underdogs by a lot of people.

In March 2019 these two went toe to toe in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, in what will likely be regarded by many Wolves fans as one of the greatest nights in their recent history.

They were able to beat Manchester United 2-1 to progress into the semi-finals, which ensured they’d be playing at Wembley.

These two historic clubs will both be invested in the idea of winning some silverware this season, of course, and they’ll both believe they have a chance to do so both in this competition and over in the Europa League.

In terms of their respective approaches to this game, we think they’ll both put out fairly decent sides – although Wolves, given their lack of depth by comparison, will probably put out a few more fringe players at Molineux.

Pushing back

The funny thing is that they’re still likely to be the favourites in this game which would’ve been completely unthinkable just a few short years ago. They’re in a great position to take this game by the scruff of the neck and continue what could prove to be another phenomenal run towards Wembley – depending on what they’re going to prioritise.

In terms of our official prediction we’re going with United to grind this one out, but we aren’t completely convinced that it’ll mean much for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer unless they can really put their foot down in the FA Cup and make it all the way through to Wembley and beyond. If they can pick up some silverware this season it’ll really take the pressure off the shoulders of the Norwegian.

Wolves, on the other hand, won’t lose all too much sleep from this one even if they do lose. They know that they’ll get their chance for revenge on February 1st when they meet again in the Premier League, but this time at Old Trafford.

The FA Cup third round is going to feature some really fascinating games that also includes Liverpool vs Everton and Arsenal vs Leeds, but as a result of the story that has developed between these two clubs in the last year or so, we think that this is the most interesting game of the round – and it’ll probably live up to that reputation.
