What Are The Expectations For Tottenham?

It’s never easy getting over the disappointment of losing in a big cup final, especially when that cup final is the Champions League final. That’s the pain that has been endured by Tottenham Hotspur fans over the course of the last month or so, ever since they were defeated by Liverpool in Madrid.

It was a game in which they never really turned up, and despite having a few decent opportunities here and there, they just couldn’t really get going. Sure, the early penalty probably changed things quite a bit, but they should’ve been able to recover given the weight of the circumstances.

But anyway, all of that is in the past now, and it’s time to start looking ahead to the future. Spurs are coming off the back of a successful season whether you want to look at it that way or you don’t, and now is the time for them to gradually start making some improvements to the team.

The next step

As reported by The Guardian we’ve already seen Tanguy Ndombele sign on the dotted line for the club, and as reported by talkSPORT, there are a few more names in the pipeline that could be confirmed sooner rather than later.

Obviously you never know one way or another what’s going to happen or who is going to come into the fold, but either way, we thought that we’d take a minute to think about what the realistic goals and expectations are for Spurs in the upcoming campaign.

In our opinion, they should really be aiming to win a trophy like the FA Cup within the upcoming season, or potentially even the League Cup. We aren’t suggesting that the Premier League or Champions League titles are beyond them by any stretch, but they need to look at things from a realistic point of view – or they at least need to try.

They still need a lot of work done to their squad and with a few top names being linked with a departure from the club, it doesn’t feel as if they’re going to get everything done that they need in the current transfer window. It’s not like that’s a disaster or anything, because if nothing else, keeping hold of Mauricio Pochettino is a huge sign of their intent.

Stepping up

Patience is going to be the key for Spurs fans, because in the next few years, we could easily see them challenging on all fronts as one of English football’s top sides. Even with that being the case, though, they need to be realistic about what the new campaign has in store for them.

Depth is going to be a problem at this moment in time, and we’d argue that they need to bring in at least four more names at the very minimum in order to find any kind of success on the same scale as last season.

It’s going to be a tall order, but they’ve certainly got the heart and determination to go a long way.
