The Premier League constantly throws up shocks and surprises in the weirdest forms imaginable, and this weekend was no different. One of the biggest results came at Bramall Lane where, in one of the most dramatic games of the season, Sheffield United managed to salvage a point against Manchester United in a 3-3 classic, as reported by BBC and The Guardian.
The hosts deserved to take the lead and so they did, with John Fleck benefitting from a fortunate deflection. Lys Mousset made it two with a lovely finish early in the second half, and it seemed from that point on that they’d breeze towards a resounding – and important – victory.
However, in seven baffling second-half minutes, Williams, Greenwood and Rashford scored to put Manchester United in the driving seat.
Oli McBurnie wasn’t about to let them take home the spoils, though, taking the ball down inside the box before rifling in a vital equaliser to send the home fans into a state of sheer pandemonium.
Blades manager Chris Wilder attempted to remain somewhat upbeat in the face of a bizarre game of football.
“Can we forget about that period, please? We just dropped off our energy levels. The old saying ‘2-0 is a dangerous scoreline’ turned into ‘oops, we’re 3-2 down’.
“And you’ve got to give them credit, just as you have us with the way we fought back at the death to get something out of the game.
“I would have been really disappointed had we not got anything from this game because for the majority of the time we were right up there in terms of the performance levels.”
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, on the hand, was more than happy to be 100% honest about how he felt throughout the course of the game.
“This team don’t give in – such a difference from last year,” he said.
“It shows the quality that we can score three in a game when we don’t perform.”
“When you’re 2-0 down, you fear the worst,” he said.
“But this group won’t give in, don’t give in. We’ve made massive strides and would have a learned a lot today.”
The Norwegian stated: “Even though the big part of this game is a negative and we are disappointed with it, the overriding feeling is a positive because of the character to stick in there and turn it around.
“They’ve come through the academy most of these boys and in the academy you don’t play in these kind of games, despite trying to teach them to play without fear, and they will have learned a lot in this 90-odd minutes.”
Sheffield United will now travel to Molineux in order to take on a fellow in-form side in the form of Wolverhampton Wanderers. Manchester United will be facing a somewhat painful trip all the way over to Astana, before hosting Aston Villa at Old Trafford in what many would describe as a must-win game within the context of their push for a spot in Europe.
