We all know that every team has to play the other 19 teams twice at some point, but we see that as a cynical view. Yes, it’s important to be consistent, but starting the season in a strong way can do wonders for the confidence of your squad.

Today, we’re going to take a look at five of the best opening weekend fixtures and what we can expect to see.

Crystal Palace vs Arsenal

It’s always interesting to see former players become managers and for Patrick Vieira, we’d say he knocked his first season with Crystal Palace out of the park, and there’s plenty of room to go even further.

Arsenal, by contrast, need to pick themselves up and dust themselves off in preparation for another run at the top four – with Selhurst Park being a pretty tricky place to get things started.

Newcastle United are now one of the richest clubs in world football. When you take that into consideration, alongside Eddie Howe doing well as their gaffer, we’d say things are looking pretty good for the Magpies.

Nottingham Forest, meanwhile, will be returning to the top flight after more than two decades away. Nobody really knows how they’re going to fare but in many ways, it’s just nice to see them back.

Leeds vs Wolves

Leeds United narrowly avoided relegation on the final day of last season but if they want to keep their Premier League journey going, they need to be smart about their summer transfer window plans.

Wolves, however, have some loftier ambitions, as they continue to go after a European return. They’ve got a few questions that need to be answered regarding their own transfer strategy but either way, this’ll be a fun match.

Manchester United vs Brighton

Erik ten Hag needs to start turning the Manchester United ship around because if he fails to do so this season, this drought may turn into an extended period of sorrow for Red Devils fans.

Brighton finished in the top half last season and they’ll be hungry for even more success. In terms of this game specifically, their 4-0 triumph just last month is enough of a reason to tune in for the sequel.

West Ham vs Manchester City

West Ham United will return to European football after another strong season, but there are persistent questions flying around regarding their feasibility as a consistent top six threat.

Manchester City have the unenviable task of trying to carry on their outstanding run of success, meaning another Premier League title and their first Champions League trophy will be the minimum that is expected.
