It was never going to be an easy away trip for Liverpool, and that certainly was the case, but The Redmen found a way to take home three points from Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon. The win keeps Jurgen Klopp’s men at the top of the Premier League table, with six victories out of six and a five point cushion over second placed Manchester City.
Both teams went into the tie on Sunday on the back of defeats in Europe, with Liverpool having to bounce back from their 2-0 defeat against Napoli. Neither team showed any ill-effects from their European adventures though in what was an end-to-end game with plenty of scoring chances for both.
It was Liverpool who took a clear advantage in the first half thanks to a wonder-strike from Trent Alexander-Arnold and a header from Roberto Firmino, that put them 2-0 up after just half an hour.
Chelsea had their chances to pull one back, while Liverpool had chances to make it 3-0 in what was an entertaining 45 minutes. In the second half, Chelsea pushed a little more and the games second brilliant goal came to give them life. N’Golo Kante gave them hope with 20 minutes to go in the game but despite further pressure, the Liverpool back line held firm.
VAR was once again at the heart of the action, ruling out a Chelsea goal which would have made the game 1-1. There was inches in the decision, but it was the correct one, with Mason Mount being offside in the build up.
Just minutes later, Liverpool went down the opposite end of the field and scored themselves, a real hammer blow to The Blues, who deserve credit for sticking with the game despite that.
the game ended 2-1, with Liverpool bringing the points back home with them to restore their five point lead at the top of the Premier League. We are very early in the season, and things are only really just beginning to settle down but there is no doubt that those five points are crucial already in Liverpool’s title bid.
Both clubs have to turn their attention to a third competition in just over a week when they play in the EFL Cup on Wednesday evening. It is fair to expect both to rest the majority if not all of their starting eleven, especially as they both face lower league opposition.
Liverpool go on the road again, they travel to face MK Dons while Chelsea are at home and will host League Two Grimsby at Stamford Bridge.
After those games it is back to the Premier League next weekend, with both teams facing opponents they will feel they can beat.
Liverpool kick things off on Saturday lunchtime with a trip to new boys Sheffield United while Chelsea will kick off at 3:00pm with a home game against Brighton. Anything other than a win midweek and a win next weekend for both clubs will be seen as an upset.
