Important Month Lies Ahead for Tottenham

We are heading out of September and into October so there is no need to panic just yet at this early stage of the season. However, one club could find themselves panicking in the Premier League very shortly if they don’t turn things around and that is Tottenham Hotspur, a club who have had their fair share of troubles so far this season.

It is important to note that Tottenham are in 7th position in the Premier League right now, so this is hardly a huge crisis, but the future of the club could well take a wrong turn if they don’t perform in the coming weeks.

They come into their game tomorrow at home to Southampton on the back of a Premier League record that has seen them win two, draw two and lose two so far. Their losses have come against Newcastle and Leicester, while they received a scare on the opening day by Aston Villa.

Draws with Manchester City and Arsenal feel a little bit like victories, but the table doesn’t lie, they only got one point for those results.

Cup Woes Hurt Badly Early in the Season

It is not just their league form that has seen Tottenham put under the spotlight, it is their league form and cup form combined. They were dumped out of the EFL Cup on Tuesday night by Colchester of League Two, drawing 0-0 in 90 minutes before losing on penalties. Tottenham played a handful of regulars in that game, and they could not break down a League Two defence.

Their Champions League return got off to a bad start too, with a draw away to Olympiakos. Not only was that a game they should have won, but they were winning 2-0 after half an hour before throwing away their hard work and drawing the game 2-2.

These stand alone fixtures are not a cause for concern as a single entity, but when you combine the collapse in Greece with the EFL Cup embarrassment and the poor start to their league campaign, it all adds up and gives Spurs plenty to think about.

What Comes Next?

Starting off this weekend, they have a game at home to Southampton that must be regarded as a must win game. Their first two Premier League games in October come away at Brighton and at home to Watford, two teams who look like being around the relegation zone this season, again two must win games.

The club also faces two home Champions League ties too, with Bayern Munich and Red Star Belgrade visiting the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the month of October.

Then to round things off, a trip to face Liverpool, one of the two main title contenders this season and a real tester for where Tottenham are right now. This isn’t a game they must win, but they have to battle and compete here, and show that they are close enough to the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City to give them problems.

We are still early in the season, but there is no doubt that the upcoming month for Tottenham is simply huge.
