English Premier League Set For Dramatic Final Day

It’s been a long and gruelling season, but this Sunday, the Premier League campaign for 2019/20 will finally come to an end with the 38th and final set of fixtures. The COVID-19 pandemic has made the season far longer than any of us were initially anticipating it to be, but along the way, it’s still been quite the journey from the top to the very bottom.

We already know that Liverpool are the Champions of England for the first time in 30 years, and simultaneously, we also know that Norwich City will be playing in the Championship after suffering relegation from the top flight. Outside of that, though, there’s still a whole lot left to be determined.

Top Four

Not so long ago it seemed as if Leicester City were destined for a place in the top four and a return to the UEFA Champions League, but it appears as if we overestimated their ability to handle the pressure of that situation.

They will go into the final day knowing that they need either a win over Manchester United or a draw and a Wolves win against Chelsea to secure their spot in next season’s competition.

United, on the other hand, just need a point to get over the finish line, whereas the aforementioned Blues have their own tough task to deal with.

Prediction: Chelsea third, Man United fourth, Leicester fifth

Sixth Place

Many expected Wolverhampton Wanderers to falter under the pressure of the UEFA Europa League this season, but in the end, that didn’t happen. They’ve been on an absolute tear since last July, and they are just one win away from securing a spot in the top six of the Premier League.

If they beat Chelsea then they’re in, but if they drop points, a Tottenham Hotspur win over Crystal Palace will ensure that Jose Mourinho’s men sneak into sixth place.

Either way, though, whoever finishes seventh will be praying that Chelsea can then beat Arsenal in the FA Cup Final, which will ensure the final UEL spot goes to the team that doesn’t quite break into the top six.

Prediction: Tottenham finish sixth, Wolves finish seventh

Relegation Battle

Aston Villa’s win over Arsenal means that they are well and truly in the driving seat in the race to beat the drop. If they can beat West Ham United on the last day of the season, they will stay up – if Watford don’t beat Arsenal by a bigger margin than them.

Bournemouth must hope for a very special outcome to ensure their great escape: they have to beat Everton and hope Villa lose to the Hammers and Watford lose to Arsenal.

Prediction: Aston Villa survive, Watford & Bournemouth are relegated

Regardless of who you want to succeed and fail in the next 48 hours, one thing that we can just about confirm is this: the final day of the Premier League season is going to be one that none of us are going to forget for a long time. If that isn’t enough to excite you, nothing is.
