Arsenal & Tottenham Produce Thrilling North London Derby

One of the most consistently entertaining fixtures in English football over the course of, well, forever, has been Arsenal vs Tottenham Hotspur in the North London derby. Throughout the course of history both teams have been amongst the biggest and best clubs in the country, and it doesn’t feel like that trend is going to subside anytime soon.

As reported by BBC and The Guardian, their encounter this past weekend certainly didn’t fail to live up to the hype as the two played out a thoroughly entertaining 2-2 draw at the Emirates.

Entertaining as always

Coming into the game it certainly felt like the momentum was more so on Arsenal’s side than anything else, despite the fact that they had lost their last game against Liverpool – because in response, Tottenham had lost against Newcastle United in what was widely considered to be a really surprising result.

In the early stages of the encounter it appeared as if Unai Emery’s side were on top, as they slowly enforced their will on Mauricio Pochettino’s men. Then, in the blink of an eye, Tottenham caught the Gunners on the counter with Lamela’s shot being pushed into the path of Christian Eriksen courtesy of Bernd Leno.

Poor decision making from Granit Xhaka led to Spurs then being awarded a penalty, which Harry Kane was more than happy to convert and slot into the bottom left hand corner of the net.

It certainly seemed as if this was going to be an uphill battle for Arsenal, but thankfully for them, they had one of the best strikers in European football in the form of Alexandre Lacazette on hand to bring them back to within just one goal as we headed into the half time interval.

A nice move that was finished off by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ensured that the scoreline went to 2-2, and in the last 20 minutes, it certainly seemed as if the tables had turned in a big way. A lot of Arsenal fans will see this as two points dropped as opposed to one point gained, and we can completely understand where they’re coming from.

Down but never out

They were pushing Tottenham back with real intent once they were able to get their second, and it seemed like only a matter of time until they got the winner. It wasn’t to be, though, with both teams sharing the spoils.

“It was an amazing match. We are proud of our work and our supporters. The result isn’t the best for us.” said Emery.

“The key was the first goal to give us confidence and give us more chances in the second half. We deserved it. We did a lot of good things. We made some mistakes in the first half and they have good players.

“Before their first goal we were playing well. Sometimes our heart is more strong than our head.”

Tottenham will have to re-group over the course of the international break, because things aren’t trending in the best of directions for the club right now.
