The Questions Surrounding Liverpool’s Season

We’ve seen a series of teams win the Premier League over the course of its history, and we’ve seen many more come close – but not quite close enough. Obviously as we all know, football existed for a long time before 1992, but that isn’t going to matter all too much if one team, in particular, continues to fall short at the final hurdle. We are, of course, referring to Liverpool.

The Reds have been so close to claiming the Premier League crown for their own over the years, but they just haven’t quite been able to take that final leap towards glory. Sometimes it’s been due to the overwhelming quality of their competitors, but sometimes, they just don’t know how to get out of their own way. This season it has been a little bit of both, because while Liverpool have played some incredible football, they’ve also seen a former lead over City in the title race evaporate before their very eyes.

Can they do it?

Liverpool Echo is reporting that Jamie Vardy and Brendan Rodgers are going to do everything in their power to hand control of this race back to the Reds, and while that’s nice and reassuring to hear, we aren’t sure it’s going to mean all that much if Liverpool don’t win the title.

The club themselves revealed on Twitter that Mohamed Salah is the PFA Fans’ Player of the Month for April. Again, that’s pretty nice to hear, but we don’t think its going to mean all that much if Liverpool don’t win the title (P.S: Mo is out of the semi final against Barcelona, for what its worth).

One of the big questions we have about this Liverpool season is simple: how are people going to look back on the campaign if they’re unable to lift either the Premier League or Champions League title? You can’t suggest that things have been an absolute failure because they’ve had some really tremendous wins along the way, but we all know how neutral and rival fans tend to react to Liverpool Football Club. Unless they’ve been winning trophies, which they haven’t been, the ridicule is always going to be there for not quite being able to get over the finish line.

Different circumstances

Up to this point there hasn’t been one crucial or key mistake in the same vein as Steven Gerrard’s slip, but in a lot of ways, there doesn’t even need to be. The bravado of manager Jurgen Klopp is always appreciated by Reds fans themselves, but neutrals don’t seem to care all that much for it. If he can’t bring a trophy back to Anfield in one way or another in the next month or so, god knows what they’re going to have to deal with on Merseyside.

For all of that doom and gloom talk, though, it’s certainly worth noting that there’s a lot of quality and heart left in this squad. If they can use that as fuel for the next few weeks then maybe, just maybe, they can pull it off.
