There are so many players in world football that you can point to and say that they’re world class, and that’s what is so great about the game. Throughout the entire globe there are superstars just waiting to be discovered, and once they are, they are well and truly off to the races. It only takes a little bit of recognition for someone’s whole career, and life, to change.
One such example is Joao Felix. The teenage sensation has had an absolutely phenomenal season with Benfica, to the point where many fans are tipping him to be the next big thing in world football. It’s hard to outright say that is going to be the case, but there’s certainly an argument to be made that he has a really promising career ahead of him.
Here we go again
Despite being very settled at Benfica (or so it seems), there’s no way of getting around the fact that he seems to be on his way out of the club sooner rather than later. The summer transfer window is upon us, and that can only mean one thing: the vultures are beginning to circle.
As reported by Mirror and Manchester Evening News it appears as if the likes of Atletico Madrid and Manchester City are going to be battling it out in order to secure his signature, but to be perfectly honest, we aren’t comfortable putting our names behind anyone at this moment in time. This thing is as wide open as you can imagine, to the point where even Felix himself probably doesn’t know which direction he’s going to go in.
This is the kind of move that could define and actually shape his entire career, so obviously, he needs to ensure that he does the right thing. We’ve already seen him struggle a little bit at the international level with Portugal, and that’s because he still needs to be given time to develop his game. It isn’t going to happen overnight, and this constant stream of pressure certainly isn’t going to help.
The ‘talk’ begins
Having the right people behind him is obviously going to be absolutely essential, but at the end of the day, he’s the only person who can make this decision. He will know where he feels most comfortable and he will know what is best for his career, and while some are suggesting that he wants to go to Atletico because he’ll get more first team football there, we can’t know that for sure.
The rumours and the mind games are always present during the transfer window, because that’s just how these clubs like to function and go about their business. We can think whatever we want about the ‘structure’ of it all, but at the end of the day, we have no real say. We can just sit back and watch the chaos unfold.
Whatever happens we just want to see Felix get the opportunity to prove what he’s capable of, and with that in mind, we wouldn’t exactly be all too disappointed to see him give Benfica a few more years of his time.
